RDM Drive and Object Storage services are now available

On May 15, 2025, we’ve officially launched our online storage services for academic research data: RDM Drive and Object Storage. These services are available free of charge throughout the 2025 fiscal year, and we encourage all researchers within the university to take advantage of them.

RDM Drive #

Features #

  • University-Official Research Cloud Storage: This service is provided for research purposes.
  • Powered by Nextcloud: It utilizes Nextcloud, an open-source online storage service, providing a storage environment accessible via web browser.
  • On-Campus Servers: The servers are located within the university, ensuring data sovereignty and potentially faster access.
  • Account Issuance: If a Kyoto University faculty or staff member (researcher) applies, accounts can be issued not only to other university faculty, staff, and students, but also to external collaborators.
  • Login for University Members: For university faculty, staff, and students, setting access rights with their email address allows login using their SPS-ID/ECS-ID.
  • Project-Based Data Management: Data can be managed on a per-research project basis.
  • User Capacity: A maximum of 5 users can utilize 1TB of storage.
  • Flexible Usage: It’s available for use by individual researchers or at the laboratory level.
  • Multiple Capacity Plans: Researchers can choose from various capacity plans, ranging from 2TB to 20TB.
  • On-Campus Support: A dedicated support system has been established within the university.

Object Storage #

Features #

  • University-Official Research Cloud Storage: This is an officially sanctioned cloud storage solution designed for academic research.
  • Amazon S3 Compatible Object Storage: It provides Amazon S3-compatible object storage that can be used for research projects and more. Please note that specialized knowledge is required to utilize this service.
  • Tenant Administrator Access: Users are granted access to a tenant administrator page, allowing for flexible use within a self-managed environment.
  • On-Campus Servers: The servers hosting this storage are located within the university.
  • Multiple Capacity Plans: Researchers can choose from various storage capacity plans, ranging from 10TB to 100TB.
